If you have some opponents each fighting at a base offset of -3 then a group of 4 of them could band together for an offset of -2 or 9 for an offset of -1.
Each group then wins or loses on the basis of a single dice roll. I think I would be unhappy with the larger groups being killed is a single combat round but if you make it so that a limited number are killed and the rest run away then it seems reasonable.
